Stuttering Treatments – The Need For Understanding
Are you a person that has a stutter? Are you a parent of a
child that has a stutter? If you have answered yes to either
one of these questions then this article may well be of
benefit and of interest to you. My name is Steve Hill; I am
now happy and proud to call myself “a former stutterer”,
and I am from England.
So why are you so proud to call yourself a former
stutterer? Well I made it my lifetime goal to achieve
fluency when I was aged around fifteen. I worked very hard
and I believe that I had a very good and positive attitude
towards the whole task. It therefore was certainly not luck
it was sheer hard work and determination – this why I am
proud of myself.
Also when you receive the types of therapy that I was and
when you receive the types of advice that I was by these so
called professional speech and language therapists then you
deserve to feel proud of yourself, in my opinion.
What do you mean?
The speech and language therapy that I received was
basically very poor, at best! The speech and language
therapists were also extremely negative in their whole
approach and they had a real lack of understanding as to
what it was like to have a stutter.
So in what way would you say they were negative?
They made it quite clear to me that I would have the
stutter for the rest of my life – very negative and very
wrong – I am now fluent! They were also far too quick to
point out that there is not, in their opinion, a cure for
stuttering – again they were wrong – but again far too
negative – a complete waste of space.
This is why I decided to try to find my own solutions to
stuttering treatment. Thankfully my parents have bought me up to think
positive and this is what helped me to overcome the
stutter.
